About Bass Drum O's
Bass Drum O's were invented by drummer and inventor Kevin Fryer, who wanted a better solution to the problem of ragged, torn port holes in bass drum resonant heads. Before Bass Drum O's, drummers would cut a hole in their reso head and leave the edge exposed — over time, the head material would fray and tear, looking unprofessional and potentially affecting the head's integrity.
The solution was elegantly simple: a reinforced plastic ring that presses into the cut hole, protecting the edge and giving the port hole a clean, finished appearance. The design caught on quickly, and Bass Drum O's became the industry standard for bass drum port hole reinforcement — used by amateur and professional drummers alike.
Beyond aesthetics, a properly ported bass drum resonant head has real sonic benefits. The port hole allows air to escape freely when the beater strikes the batter head, reducing unwanted sustain and producing the tight, punchy kick drum sound that works so well in live and recorded contexts. Combined with internal muffling, a ported reso head gives you precise control over your kick drum's tone.
