Remo is the world's leading drum head manufacturer, founded in California in 1957 by Remo Belli and responsible for inventing the plastic drum head — a development that transformed drumming by replacing the animal skin heads that had been used for centuries. Today, Remo produces drum heads for virtually every application, from professional recording and touring to hand percussion and music therapy, and their heads are found on more drum kits worldwide than any other brand.

At Into Music we stock a comprehensive Remo range covering drum heads across the Ambassador, Emperor, Powerstroke and specialist series, plus a wide selection of djembes, hand drums and frame drums.

Remo Drum Heads

Remo's drum head range is built around four key series, each with a distinct tonal character:

  • Ambassador — Remo's most versatile and widely used series. A single-ply head available in coated, clear, black suede and smooth white (bass drum) finishes. The Ambassador delivers an open, resonant tone with a warm attack — the go-to choice for jazz, pop and general use. The Ambassador X adds extra durability for heavier playing
  • Emperor — a two-ply head offering more durability and a slightly warmer, more controlled tone than the Ambassador. Available in clear and black suede, plus ProPack Plus sets in Fusion and Rock configurations. The Emperor is the preferred choice for rock and heavier playing styles
  • Powerstroke 3 — a bass drum and snare head with a built-in internal damping ring that reduces unwanted overtones and produces a focused, punchy sound. Available in clear and coated for bass drum (20"/22") and snare (14")
  • Powerstroke 77 — a specialist snare head with a reverse dot and internal damping for a controlled, focused snare sound with reduced ring. Available in coated and clear dot coated

Also available: CS Dot Coated (13") and Pinstripe Clear (8").

Remo Djembes

About Remo

Remo was founded in North Hollywood, California in 1957 by Remo Belli, a professional drummer who recognised the limitations of the animal skin drum heads that were standard at the time. Skin heads were highly sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity, making them unpredictable in live performance and difficult to maintain. Belli developed the first commercially successful plastic drum head — the Weatherking — which offered consistent performance in any conditions and transformed the drumming world.

Today, Remo is the world's largest drum head manufacturer, producing heads for virtually every application from professional recording and touring to music education, hand percussion and music therapy. Their Ambassador series remains the world's most popular drum head — a single-ply head that delivers an open, resonant tone with a warm attack, suited to a wide range of musical styles and playing contexts.

The Emperor series introduced the two-ply construction that has become the standard for rock and heavier playing styles. Two plies of film produce a warmer, more controlled tone with greater durability, making the Emperor the preferred choice for drummers who play hard and need a head that can withstand the punishment.

The Powerstroke series addresses the need for a more controlled, focused sound — particularly for bass drums and snares where unwanted overtones can muddy the mix. The internal damping ring reduces ring and sustain, producing a punchy, defined sound that sits well in a live or recorded mix without requiring additional muffling.

Remo's hand percussion range reflects the company's broader commitment to making quality percussion instruments accessible to musicians of all backgrounds. Their key-tuned djembes use synthetic heads and bodies that offer consistent tuning and durability in any climate — a significant advantage over traditional rope-tuned djembes with natural skin heads.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Remo Ambassador is a single-ply head offering an open, resonant tone with a warm attack — the most versatile and widely used drum head in the world, suited to jazz, pop and general use. The Emperor is a two-ply head offering more durability and a slightly warmer, more controlled tone, making it the preferred choice for rock and heavier playing styles. Two plies produce more attack and less sustain than a single ply.
Remo Powerstroke heads feature a built-in internal damping ring that reduces unwanted overtones and ring, producing a focused, punchy sound. The Powerstroke 3 is available for bass drum and snare; the Powerstroke 77 is a specialist snare head with a reverse dot for additional control. Powerstroke heads are popular with drummers who want a controlled, defined sound without additional muffling.
Clear drum heads produce a brighter, more open sound with more sustain and overtones. Coated drum heads have a thin coating applied to the playing surface that produces a warmer, slightly drier sound with more attack and less sustain. Coated heads are also required for brush playing, as the coating provides the surface texture that brushes need to produce their characteristic swishing sound.
