About Tama Drums

Tama was founded in Japan in 1974 as a division of the Hoshino Gakki company, and has grown into one of the world's most respected drum manufacturers over the following five decades. Tama's reputation rests on two foundations: the quality and tonal excellence of their drum kits — particularly the Starclassic series — and the engineering precision of their hardware, particularly the Iron Cobra and Speed Cobra bass drum pedal ranges.

The Starclassic series represents the pinnacle of Tama's production drum kit manufacturing. The choice of shell material has a profound impact on the tonal character of a drum kit. Maple shells produce a warm, full-bodied tone with a strong fundamental and excellent projection — the most versatile choice for a wide range of musical styles. Walnut/birch shells produce a warmer, darker tone with enhanced low-frequency depth, suited to styles where a more vintage or organic sound is desired. Bubinga — an exceptionally dense African hardwood — produces a powerful, focused tone with outstanding projection and sustain, making it the choice for drummers who need maximum volume and presence.

The Iron Cobra bass drum pedal has been one of the most widely used professional pedals in the world since its introduction. The Power Glide and Rolling Glide cam options allow drummers to choose between a linear, consistent feel (Rolling Glide) and an accelerating feel that builds power through the stroke (Power Glide). The Speed Cobra's spring-loaded footboard design provides a different feel again — a faster, more responsive action suited to drummers who prioritise speed and rebound. The Dyna-Sync represents Tama's most advanced pedal engineering, with a direct-drive mechanism that provides an exceptionally precise, immediate connection between foot and beater.

Frequently Asked Questions

The shell material determines the tonal character of the kit. Starclassic Maple produces a warm, full-bodied tone with a strong fundamental and excellent projection — the most versatile choice. Starclassic Walnut/Birch produces a warmer, darker tone with enhanced low-frequency depth, suited to styles where a more vintage or organic sound is desired. Starclassic Bubinga uses an exceptionally dense African hardwood that produces a powerful, focused tone with outstanding projection and sustain.
The Power Glide and Rolling Glide refer to the cam shape on the Iron Cobra pedal, which determines how the feel changes through the stroke. The Rolling Glide cam produces a linear, consistent feel throughout the stroke. The Power Glide cam produces an accelerating feel that builds power as the stroke progresses, giving a sense of increased drive and momentum. The choice is personal preference — many drummers try both before deciding.
The Tama Dyna-Sync is Tama's most advanced bass drum pedal, featuring a direct-drive mechanism that provides an exceptionally precise, immediate connection between the foot and the beater. Unlike chain or belt drive pedals, direct drive eliminates any slack or flex in the drive system, producing a more responsive, transparent feel that many professional drummers prefer for its accuracy and control.
