About Schlagwerk
Schlagwerk — the name means 'percussion' in German — was founded in Germany with a commitment to producing percussion instruments that celebrate the joy of making music. Their product range reflects a broad and imaginative approach to percussion, from the meditative resonance of the handpan to the playful expressiveness of the Wah-Wah Tube, united by a consistent commitment to quality materials, careful craftsmanship and musical integrity.
The handpan is perhaps the most remarkable instrument of the 21st century. Developed in Switzerland in the early 2000s from the Caribbean steelpan tradition, the handpan produces a warm, resonant, sustaining tone that has captivated musicians and listeners worldwide. Its convex steel surface contains a series of tuned tone fields arranged around a central Ding note, each producing a clear, singing pitch when struck with the hands. The result is an instrument that is simultaneously melodic and rhythmic, meditative and expressive — capable of producing music of extraordinary beauty with relatively little technical training.
The scale of a handpan determines its musical character and the emotional quality of the music it produces. Minor scales like the Kurd and Celtic Minor produce a melancholic, introspective quality that is particularly suited to meditative and ambient music. Major scales like the Sabye produce a brighter, more uplifting character. The Integral scale bridges both worlds, offering broad musical flexibility for improvisation and composition.
Schlagwerk's Hand Tubes and Table Tubes extend the same philosophy of accessible, beautiful tuned percussion to a more compact and affordable format. Tuned to pentatonic scales, they are immediately playable by musicians of any background — the pentatonic scale produces harmonious results regardless of which notes are played together, making them ideal for improvisation, music therapy and group music-making.
