Snareweight is an Australian brand that has become one of the most popular snare dampening solutions among professional drummers worldwide. Their leather-and-magnet dampening system attaches to the snare drum head without adhesive, gel or tape — using a small magnet to hold a precisely weighted leather pad against the head, allowing you to dial in exactly the amount of dampening you need with a simple repositioning of the pad. The result is a natural, musical dampening effect that reduces unwanted overtones without killing the life and resonance of the drum.

At Into Music we stock the full Snareweight range covering the M1 and M80 systems in multiple colours, plus the Speedy Drum Key.

Snareweight M1

The M1 is Snareweight's original and most popular model — a single leather pad held in place by a magnet that attaches to the hoop of the snare drum. The leather pad rests on the drum head, providing a controlled amount of dampening that reduces ring and overtones while preserving the fundamental tone and sensitivity of the drum. Available in Black, Brown, White, Oxblood Red, Purple, Lime Green and the limited edition Pumpkin Orange.

Snareweight M80

The M80 is a heavier version of the M1, providing more dampening for drummers who need greater control over ring and sustain — particularly useful in studio recording contexts or on snare drums with a naturally long sustain. Available in standard, White and limited edition Pumpkin Orange.

Snareweight Speedy Drum Key

The Speedy Drum Key is a ratchet-style drum key that allows faster tuning with less effort — a practical upgrade from a standard drum key for drummers who tune frequently.

About Snareweight

Snareweight was developed in Australia by a drummer who was frustrated with the limitations of conventional snare dampening solutions — gel pads that leave residue, tape that damages heads, and moon gels that fall off mid-performance. The solution was elegantly simple: a small piece of leather held against the drum head by a magnet attached to the hoop, providing consistent, repositionable dampening without any adhesive or permanent contact with the head.

The leather material is central to the Snareweight's effectiveness. Unlike rubber or gel dampeners, leather has a natural density and flexibility that produces a more musical dampening effect — it absorbs some of the high-frequency overtones that cause unwanted ring while allowing the fundamental tone and mid-frequency body of the drum to remain present. The result is a snare drum that sounds controlled and focused rather than dead and choked.

The magnet attachment system means the Snareweight can be repositioned anywhere around the hoop in seconds, allowing the drummer to adjust the amount and character of dampening by moving the pad closer to or further from the centre of the head. Moving the pad towards the edge of the head produces less dampening; moving it towards the centre produces more. This gives the drummer precise, intuitive control over the sound of the drum without any tools or permanent modification.

The M1 and M80 differ in the weight of the leather pad — the M80 is heavier, producing more dampening and a shorter sustain. The M1 is the more versatile choice for most playing situations; the M80 is preferred by drummers who need more aggressive dampening, particularly in studio recording contexts where a very controlled, dry snare sound is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Snareweight uses a small magnet that attaches to the hoop of the snare drum to hold a leather pad against the drum head. The leather pad dampens the head by absorbing some of the high-frequency overtones that cause unwanted ring, while allowing the fundamental tone and body of the drum to remain present. The pad can be repositioned anywhere around the hoop to adjust the amount of dampening, and removed entirely in seconds with no residue.
The M1 and M80 differ in the weight of the leather pad. The M1 is lighter, providing a moderate amount of dampening suited to most live and recording situations. The M80 is heavier, providing more aggressive dampening and a shorter sustain — preferred by drummers who need a very controlled, dry snare sound, particularly in studio recording contexts.
Snareweight offers several advantages over gel pads and tape. It leaves no residue on the drum head, can be repositioned instantly without tools, stays in place reliably during performance, and produces a more musical dampening effect due to the natural properties of leather. It is also reusable indefinitely, making it a more cost-effective long-term solution than disposable gel pads or tape.
