About Snareweight
Snareweight was developed in Australia by a drummer who was frustrated with the limitations of conventional snare dampening solutions — gel pads that leave residue, tape that damages heads, and moon gels that fall off mid-performance. The solution was elegantly simple: a small piece of leather held against the drum head by a magnet attached to the hoop, providing consistent, repositionable dampening without any adhesive or permanent contact with the head.
The leather material is central to the Snareweight's effectiveness. Unlike rubber or gel dampeners, leather has a natural density and flexibility that produces a more musical dampening effect — it absorbs some of the high-frequency overtones that cause unwanted ring while allowing the fundamental tone and mid-frequency body of the drum to remain present. The result is a snare drum that sounds controlled and focused rather than dead and choked.
The magnet attachment system means the Snareweight can be repositioned anywhere around the hoop in seconds, allowing the drummer to adjust the amount and character of dampening by moving the pad closer to or further from the centre of the head. Moving the pad towards the edge of the head produces less dampening; moving it towards the centre produces more. This gives the drummer precise, intuitive control over the sound of the drum without any tools or permanent modification.
The M1 and M80 differ in the weight of the leather pad — the M80 is heavier, producing more dampening and a shorter sustain. The M1 is the more versatile choice for most playing situations; the M80 is preferred by drummers who need more aggressive dampening, particularly in studio recording contexts where a very controlled, dry snare sound is required.
