Ludwig Super Brass LB401 14" x 5" Brass Snare Drum

The Ludwig Super Brass LB401 14" x 5" Snare Drum combines Ludwig's legendary seamless brass-shell construction with a distinctive polished brass finish, nickel hardware and vintage-inspired detailing.

Inspired by Ludwig's original Super Series from around 1960, the modern LB401 features a 1.2mm seamless brass shell, 10 Imperial lugs and 2.3mm steel triple-flanged hoops.

Unlike the black nickel-plated Black Beauty or chrome-plated Chrome-Over-Brass, the Super Brass allows the natural brass appearance to take centre stage, paired beautifully with nickel-finished hardware and a vintage-inspired Transition-era badge.

The result is a professional 14x5 brass snare with plenty of warmth, body and attack, alongside a look that stands apart from almost everything else in Ludwig's USA metal-snare family.

1.2mm Seamless Brass Shell

At the heart of the LB401 is Ludwig's 1.2mm seamless brass shell.

Ludwig's seamless metal-shell construction has played an important role in some of the company's most famous snare drums, and the Super Brass brings that same premium brass platform to a very different-looking instrument.

Brass delivers plenty of warmth, body and harmonic richness while retaining the projection and attack expected from a professional metal snare.

The relatively shallow 5" depth keeps the response quick and articulate, creating an extremely versatile combination.

Polished Brass Finish

One of the defining features of the Super Brass is its beautiful natural polished brass appearance.

Rather than covering the brass with black nickel or chrome plating, the LB401 uses a lacquered brass finish that allows the colour and character of the material itself to remain visible.

Combined with the contrasting nickel hardware, it gives the Super Brass a distinctive vintage-inspired aesthetic.

It's immediately recognisable as a Ludwig, but it looks very different from the more familiar Black Beauty and Supraphonic.

Vintage-Inspired Nickel Hardware

The LB401 features nickel-finished hardware rather than the conventional chrome hardware found across much of Ludwig's modern snare range.

The softer appearance of nickel works particularly well against the natural brass shell and contributes significantly to the Super Brass's vintage aesthetic.

It's an important part of this model's identity and one of the reasons we wouldn't describe the LB401 as simply another finish variation of the Black Beauty.

Classic 14" x 5" Dimensions

The 14" x 5" size gives the LB401 a quick and responsive feel.

At higher tunings, there's plenty of crisp articulation and attack for tighter playing.

Medium tunings bring out an excellent balance of warmth, body and projection.

Take the tuning lower and the brass shell provides plenty of richness while the relatively shallow 5" depth helps retain definition.

It's an extremely versatile size for both recording and live performance.

10 Ludwig Imperial Lugs

The LB401 features 10 classic Ludwig Imperial lugs, finished in nickel to complement the rest of the hardware.

Ten tuning points provide precise control over head tension around the 14" shell.

The Imperial Lug design also reinforces the drum's unmistakable Ludwig identity while working beautifully with the vintage-inspired Super Brass aesthetic.

2.3mm Steel Triple-Flanged Hoops

The Super Brass uses 2.3mm steel triple-flanged hoops with a nickel finish.

These retain an open and responsive feel while providing plenty of definition for rimshots and cross-stick playing.

Combined with the seamless brass shell and 5" depth, they help create an excellent balance of resonance, sensitivity and attack.

Vintage-Inspired Transition Badge

One of our favourite details on the Super Brass is its Transition-era-inspired Ludwig badge.

The design references the highly collectable badges associated with the period around Ludwig's original Super Series.

It's a small detail, but it ties the modern LB401 back beautifully to the vintage Ludwig drums that inspired it.

Inspired by the Original Ludwig Super Series

The history behind the Super Brass is particularly interesting.

Ludwig's original Super Series appeared around the turn of the 1960s, immediately before the emergence of the Supraphonic design that would become one of the most famous snare drums ever produced.

The modern Super Series revisits that period of Ludwig history while updating the drum for today's players.

The LB401 combines the classic concept with a lacquered brass shell, nickel hardware and vintage-inspired badge to create something that feels both historic and contemporary.

LB401 vs LB403 – 5" vs 6.5"

Ludwig offers the Super Brass in two classic depths.

The LB401 measures 14" x 5".

The LB403 measures 14" x 6.5".

Both use Ludwig's 1.2mm seamless brass shell with natural brass finish and nickel hardware.

The shallower LB401 provides a quicker and tighter response with excellent articulation.

The deeper LB403 adds greater body, fundamental depth and low-end presence.

Choose the LB401 if you prioritise speed, articulation and a classic 5" snare response.

Choose the LB403 if you're looking for a bigger and deeper Super Brass backbeat.

Super Brass LB401 vs Black Beauty LB416

This is an important comparison because both are premium 14x5 Ludwig brass snares.

The LB401 Super Brass uses a 1.2mm seamless brass shell with a lacquered natural brass finish and nickel hardware.

The LB416 Black Beauty uses a 1.2mm seamless brass shell with its iconic black nickel finish and chrome hardware.

Both offer the warmth, body and harmonic richness associated with Ludwig's seamless brass construction, but their finishes and overall aesthetics are completely different.

Choose the Black Beauty if you want the definitive classic Ludwig brass snare.

Choose the Super Brass if you love the seamless Ludwig brass formula but prefer its distinctive vintage-inspired natural brass and nickel appearance.

Super Brass vs Chrome-Over-Brass LB400B

The LB401 is also closely related in concept to Ludwig's Chrome-Over-Brass models.

Both use premium seamless brass shell construction, but the finishes are very different.

The LB401 leaves the natural brass appearance visible beneath a clear lacquer and pairs it with nickel hardware.

The LB400B Chrome-Over-Brass uses a chrome-plated brass shell.

The Chrome-Over-Brass gives you the classic bright chrome Ludwig metal-snare appearance.

The Super Brass offers a warmer and considerably more vintage-looking alternative.

Super Brass vs Supraphonic LM400

Despite their similar dimensions and Ludwig heritage, the LB401 and LM400 use completely different shell materials.

The LB401 Super Brass uses a 1.2mm seamless brass shell.

The LM400 Supraphonic uses a seamless aluminium shell.

Brass provides greater warmth and harmonic richness, while aluminium produces the naturally crisp and controlled character associated with the Supraphonic.

Choose the LM400 if you're looking for the classic Ludwig aluminium sound.

Choose the LB401 if you want the warmth and richness of seamless brass with the distinctive Super Series aesthetic.

Super Brass vs Universal Brass

The Ludwig Universal Brass provides a more affordable route into a Ludwig brass snare.

The Universal uses an all-brass shell and is designed to offer a versatile brass voice at a considerably more accessible price.

The Super Brass uses Ludwig's premium 1.2mm seamless brass construction, alongside its distinctive lacquered brass finish, nickel hardware and vintage-inspired detailing.

If value is the priority, the Universal Brass is an excellent choice.

If you specifically want Ludwig's premium seamless shell construction and Super Series styling, the LB401 is the step up.

Excellent for Recording

The LB401 makes an excellent studio snare.

The 5" shell provides a fast and articulate response while brass brings warmth and harmonic richness to the recorded sound.

Tune it higher for a tight and crisp response.

Medium tunings provide a versatile combination of body, attack and sensitivity.

Bring the tuning down and the seamless brass shell retains plenty of richness while the shallow dimensions help keep the response defined.

It's the sort of snare that can cover a huge amount of ground without losing its own character.
