The Rohema Flat Straw Brush is the more characterful sibling of the standard Straw Brush —same European broomcorn material, but with a key difference: the bristles are slightly darker, with a higher moisture content that makes them a touch heavier. This gives the Flat Straw Brush a subtle top-heaviness and a noticeably pleasant rebound behaviour that the standard version doesn't quite replicate.
The defining physical feature is the wide, fanned-out playing surface. Where a standard brush or rod has a relatively compact contact area, the Flat Straw Brush spreads out into a broad, flat fan that produces unique smacking sounds with a wide, enveloping character particularly effective on cajon, snare, and hand percussion where surface area and texture matter. It's a genuinely distinctive sound that opens up tonal possibilities you simply can't get from conventional brushes or rods.
Volume-wise, the Flat Straw Brush sits in the same sweet spot as the standard Straw Brush: more presence than a metal wire brush, less attack than a wooden rod. This makes it equally at home on quieter passages of a drum kit performance, jazz settings, or cajon playing where you want warmth and body without the sharpness of a rod strike. Used alongside other brushes or sticks, it becomes a powerful tool for creative sound layering and experimentation.
