SONOR SQ2 13" x 7" Birch Snare Drum – Bubinga Veneer

This SONOR SQ2 13" x 7" Snare Drum is an individually configured premium snare, combining a Scandinavian Birch shell with a striking Bubinga outer veneer.

Handcrafted in Germany as part of SONOR's flagship SQ2 Drum System, this isn't a standard production-line snare. SQ2 drums are individually configured from a huge choice of shell materials, constructions, dimensions, veneers, finishes and hardware options, making each specification something a little different.

The combination of a compact 13" diameter with a deeper 7" shell makes this a particularly interesting alternative to a conventional 14" main snare, while the Scandinavian Birch construction provides the strong projection and clear response associated with SONOR's premium birch shells.

Scandinavian Birch Shell

At the heart of this SQ2 is a Scandinavian Birch shell, one of the premium shell materials available through SONOR's SQ2 custom system.

SONOR describes Scandinavian Birch as having a distinctive character with strong projection, clear low and high frequencies and a smooth, balanced midrange.

Combined with the 13" x 7" dimensions, this creates an unusual balance of compact diameter and additional shell depth – a great option for players looking for something different from the traditional 14" snare format.

Bubinga Outer Veneer

The exterior of this custom SQ2 is finished with a premium Bubinga wood veneer, giving the drum its distinctive natural appearance.

Importantly, the Bubinga is the outer decorative veneer, while the primary shell material is Scandinavian Birch.

As with other SQ2 natural veneers, the figuring and grain of the wood gives each drum its own individual appearance.

SONOR SQ2

SQ2 represents the top end of SONOR's custom drum manufacturing, with instruments individually handcrafted by SONOR's master craftsmen in Germany.

The SQ2 system allows drummers to choose from different shell materials and constructions alongside an extensive selection of natural veneers, lacquer finishes and hardware options.

FAQs

What is the SONOR SQ2 Series?

SQ2 is SONOR's flagship custom drum system. Individual drums can be configured with different shell materials, shell constructions, sizes, veneers, finishes and hardware options, making each SQ2 specification highly individual.

What is this SQ2 snare made from?

The primary shell material is Scandinavian Birch, with a premium Bubinga wood outer veneer.

Is this a Bubinga snare drum?

Not quite. Bubinga is the outer veneer on this particular SQ2. The primary shell construction is Birch, so it is best described as a Birch snare with Bubinga veneer rather than a Bubinga-shell snare.

What does SONOR Scandinavian Birch sound like?

SONOR describes its Scandinavian Birch as having a distinctive sound with tremendous projection, clear low and high frequencies and a smooth, balanced midrange.

What difference does the 13" x 7" size make?

Compared with a conventional 14" snare, the 13" diameter provides a more compact format, while the deeper 7" shell provides plenty of room for body and depth. It makes this an interesting choice for drummers looking for an alternative main snare or a powerful secondary snare.
