What Is the Yamaha EAD20?
The EAD20 is a complete electronic acoustic drum system — a compact module and sensor unit that mounts directly onto your bass drum hoop. It captures a high-quality stereo image of your entire acoustic kit without surrounding it with microphones, stands, and cables. From there, you can process your acoustic sound, layer electronic elements, record into a DAW, practise with headphones, or create content through the Rec'n'Share app.

What's New Over the EAD10?
The EAD20 is not an incremental update. Yamaha has made some genuinely significant changes:

The Enhanced Sensor Unit
The Sensor Unit is where the EAD experience starts, and Yamaha has developed a new version for the EAD20. It mounts to your bass drum hoop, capturing the complete acoustic kit in stereo. The improved processing delivers a drum sound that Yamaha describes as natural, balanced, clearly defined, and powerful — and it retains the acoustic character of your actual drums rather than replacing them with samples.
The Sensor Unit also includes a built-in bass drum trigger, so you can start layering an electronic kick sound immediately without buying a separate trigger. That's a particularly useful detail for drummers who want to explore hybrid setups without a big initial investment.
Recording: 8-in / 10-out USB Audio
This is one of the biggest upgrades for anyone who wants to record drums at home or in a project studio. The EAD20's 8-in / 10-out USB audio lets you send multichannel audio directly into a compatible DAW — microphone audio, trigger voices, and effects can be handled as separate elements in your mix, rather than being committed to a single stereo recording.
That's a meaningful step up from what most acoustic drummers deal with. Instead of setting up microphones, stands, and a separate audio interface every time you want to record, the EAD20 gives you a capable multitrack recording setup that's ready to go in minutes.
Hybrid Drumming and Trigger Expansion
The EAD20 supports up to nine trigger inputs, giving hybrid drummers significantly more scope than the EAD10. The Sensor Unit handles the kick trigger from day one, but you can add external triggers and electronic pads to expand your setup over time.
Add samples beneath the kick. Layer electronic sounds on the snare and toms. Transform the room ambience with effects. Or build out a complete hybrid rig. The EAD20 positions itself for acoustic, hybrid, electronic, and percussion setups — it's not limited to a conventional acoustic drum configuration.
Practice Made Better
Practising acoustic drums with headphones and a backing track can be frustrating. The natural volume of the kit tends to overpower your monitoring mix. The EAD20 solves this by capturing your kit and letting you blend it into a proper headphone mix alongside your playback audio.
You can hear your timing, dynamics, ghost notes, kick consistency, and overall balance much more clearly when everything is coming through the same monitoring system. Yamaha describes it as helping drummers hear the detail in their playing while keeping monitoring levels safe. For teaching, self-assessment, and focused practice, it's a particularly useful tool.
Content Creation and Rec'n'Share
The EAD20 works with Yamaha's Rec'n'Share app, letting you combine the module's audio output with video from a compatible smartphone or tablet. Play along with a backing track in the app, and your performance, the track, and the video are brought together in one workflow — no separate audio interface, no complicated routing, no relying on your phone's microphone for drum audio.
For drum cover creators, teachers, and anyone producing regular video content, the difference in audio quality is immediately noticeable.
EAD Touch App Control
The EAD Touch app gives you a more intuitive interface for operating and customising the EAD20 — something the EAD10 never offered. Three assignable modifiers (replacing the EAD10's fixed ones) let you configure controls around the way you play rather than working around a fixed setup.
